As we move into March 2011 we are beginning to see the first signs of spring, the evenings are not so short, it seems as though we have seen the last of the snow and the temperatures have risen. This is the perfect time of year to try out some fresh new recipes using seasonal produce.
It is difficult to know which produce is actually in season because supermarkets are now able to stock most fruit and veg all year round. Below I have listed the produce that is in season this February and March:
Cabbage, cauliflower, celeriac, chard, chicory, forced rhubard, leeks, parsnips, spinach, swede, turnip, and potatoes.
Beetroot, cabbage, cauliflower, leeks, mint, parsley, broccoli, radishes, rhubarb, sorrell, purple sprouting broccoli, and sweet potatoes.
Meat and fish are also seasonal, goose, guinea fowl, hare, venison are in season during February and early March. If you prefer fish or seafood cockles, cod, crab, halibut, lobster, mussels, and oysters are also in season. BBC Good Food have some delicious recipes using some of the vegetables that are currently in season, you should try them out.
The BBC have a Seasonality Table which gives you an all year round guide as to which meat, fish and fresh produce is in season.
